Elvis Joins The Army! Did He Visit Batum?

Being a fan of trivia, I happened to note that tomorrow is the anniversary of Elvis Presley joining the Army in 1958.  It immediately set me humming Blue Suede Shoes and thinking of being a 13 year old girl when I first saw him perform at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield MO somewhere around that time.  I remember all of the screaming at the concert and wondering what was making all of those girls go so nutty (I was slow to develop)! Anyway, I went on a search for a picture of Elvis in his Army uniform and the only good one I could find was a picture of an uncirculated postage stamp.  Ok, I thought, that will do.  Then I noticed something strange. Don’t Overlook Foreclosures

Foreclosures (REO properties) can be a real opportunity to get a lot for your money.  Of course……they can also be a black hole that you just get to keep pouring money into.  That’s why I am such a big fan of having professional inspections done to make sure you know exactly what you might need to do.  My job, representing only buyers, lets me be there on your side helping you make the right decision.  So, if you are in the market for real estate, let Read the rest of this entry

Better Than A New Dress with Matching Shoes!

Do you remember when you were a little kid and your mother wanted to get you all dressed up for Easter?  Back then it was always something stiff and scratchy…….but a new look doesn’t always have to be that way!  Take a look at my newly remodeled office building!  Fresh paint last week and the new awning and street sign just went up.  I am stoked!  Poor old building had looked a little sad, but now it is the fitting home for Buyer’s Broker, my real estate company that negotiates and protects home buyers only.  Finally, someone to look out for the buyer ALL THE TIME, and a pretty office to boot.  I invite you all to come in and see me….the inside is all redone too!  Not only is it a nice place to work……….but I am surrounded by nice people.  My new tenants sharing my space are Sarah Henery of Whole 9 Online, Web Design & Internet Marketing,  Terry Faust of S.C.A.N., a foundation serving parents of special needs children, Andrea Ledbetter of Outside The Box Eduction and Bill Vernon, Tax Specialist.  A great group.  Come in and see us at 238 S. Jefferson Ave Suite A

Dr. Martin Luther King and “The Help”

I was born in the land of the ‘almost-white’…..Springfield MO. I suppose anyone from the Midwest who has lived outside of big cities has the same experience. Racial diversity was an unknown in our white towns. It still is in a lot of places.  Even religious diversity was and is sketchy. Most of us at this time in my life gave no thought to civil rights and a lot of people I knew looked down on “negroes”, as they were referred to then (or worse). I never could figure out how you could hold this prejudice if you didn’t know any “negroes”! I was just finishing college during the 60′s and consider myself fortunate to have been a witness to the civil rights movement. I wasn’t bold enough to join in on the March on Washington, but it came right through St. Louis where I was living at the time, and I regret it still. That was back in 1963 and 1964 the Civil Rights Act passed. I was very happy for that then and I am now. It did not end man’s inhumanity to man, not in the country and not even in our neighborhoods, but it was a start.

Last fall I saw the movie The Help and I was glad for that too. I think it is important to keep having our attention drawn to the inequalities and tragedies caused by prejudice….just to remind us that we never want to go back to living like that. It was, however, a very gentle look at racial prejudice and segregation.

FIVE REASONS WHY I LOVE MY BOOK CLUB

This is a silly video, I know.  But……..it represents all you can hope for when you belong to a book club.  It’s members are friends who are smart and curious and silly.  The perfect combination if you ask me.  Here are my reasons for spending time with this group the past ten years.

1) Your thinking is greatly expanded.  If you can take a private activity like reading and enhance it into a social experience, you have grown personally. The insights of others can be so different from what you as a single reader gathered from the read.  Fascinating.

2) You have the opportunity to interact with people that you might not have known otherwise.  The people in my group are all friends and I like them a lot, but they are not my best friends.  I don’t spend much time with any of them outside the group and that’s OK with all of us I think, as we all have really busy lives. They are of great value to me because they represent a whole different kind of friendship that I don’t have anywhere else.

3) You step out of your usual habit when choosing books.  Our group generally chooses literary fiction, which is my taste in reading.  I am usually not very interested in science fiction, for instance, but we usually choose to read at least one book of that genre each year. Despite my prejudice, I generally enjoy the read. We also mix it up with  historical fiction, biographies and non-fiction.  I feel that my reading tastes and appreciations have greatly expanded. We seldom go for the easy read. I would probably be rather lazy in my choices if left on my own for all my reading.

4) Sometimes a book just has to be discussed with someone!  When I finish a really good book I usually feel a certain sadness that the experience has ended. I treasure being able to enjoy the book all over again by finding out how others reacted to it. A kind of  extended gratification I guess!

5)Sometimes a book is enjoyable but just doesn’t lend itself to discussion…..or it turned out to be too boring to inspire exploring of the subject matter.  That’s when we  put the book down and enjoy the fun of just chatting.  This works for me!

If you love to read………..reach out and find a group like this that can truly enrich your reading experience!

Lebanon Has A Specialty Photographer

If you look around Lebanon, you will find more talent than you ever would have imagined.  As part of my continued exploring of our community, I recently interviewed Erica McKimmey of Erica McKimmey Photography.  Once she had taken my photograph and I didn’t entirely choke up (!), I had to pass on the word to others who fear the camera lens.  Besides knowing how to set anyone at ease for their photograph, her work doing senior pictures for high school students is exceptional. Take a look at what she can do!

First Time Home Buyers Are the Best!

There is no way to surpass the excitement and enthusiasm of a new homeowner….but first timers are the best! Kudos to Millie Sharp. Just out of college and has her act together already and has purchased her first home. Enjoy, Millie…..had fun being your exclusive buyer’s agent!

Hair on Fire?

As I rushed to get the LAST thing off my list Friday before the week ended, I realized I was exhausted.

I went home, skipped dinner and just vegged out on the couch for two hours.  No reading, no playing with the dog….no nothing!  I lay there thinking of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes quotation…….

“There is never enough time to do all the nothing you want.”

It amazes me that most of us just find a way to keep going.  There is, of course, a price to pay for doing this.  Our Bodies have a thing or two to say about our fast pace.  I was recently reading an article from the Mayo Clinic that was dealing with the subject  and ways to combat it.  They suggest relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation, additional sleep and reaching out to others.  I think the article from the Mayo Clinic was good and somewhat helpful, however, is there more to it than that?

Check out the blog Mind Power  for a different point of view that made a lot of sense to me.  She suggests that people and activities merely create a situation and it is our reaction to that situation that causes the stress.  Research shows that it is possible to learn how to turn off stress.

How do you handle stress?  Scream and yell? Shut down? Just keep going?  I’d be interested to hear.  I would also be interested to find out if you detected the hidden “Easter eggs” in the body of this blog post! :)

LIKE MY BUSINESS PAGE: SEE MORE FEATURES AND INFO!

I recently had the opportunity  to take a look at a new Lebanon, Missouri business. Having quite a sweet tooth it had to be the first business I interviewed for my “What’s Cookin’ In Lebanon” portion of my blog.   Notice how “fluffy” I am !! Check out my Buyer’s Broker of Lebanon, MO business page on Facebook. You can link to my blog from there if you would like to read more!  Send me your suggestions of the business or restaurant you would like to see here next! I am writing about a lot more than real estate!  I also invite guest authors on my blog.  Have something to say? Let’s hear it!

Happy National S’mores Day!

Would you believe that there is actually a holiday of this sort? August 10th every year.  Well, I’ll celebrate that. Love them! Gooey marshmallows melted over a campfire and then slapped on a graham cracker, topped off with a big piece of chocolate bar and finished with a graham cracker lid. Heaven!

When I saw this on a calendar, I began to give serious thought to this very un-serious (!) matter. Where did s’more’s come from?  It is thought that the Campfire Girls and Girls Scouts invented them in the 1920′s. A 1927 Girl Scout manual gave the explanation of their distinctive name evolving either because you were in such a hurry for “some more” that you slur your words…or maybe your mouth is just too full of aticky stuff.

Regardless of how it started over 90 years ago, the little dessert has evolved. Not only are there dozens of recipe variations, but did you realize that you can also be made on a grill or you can microwave them? That’s right. There is actually a gadget that is made specifically for microwaving s’mores. Under $10.00 too! Tha’s all I need. One more gadget in my kitchen junk drawer.

Now what I really find interesting is the history of graham crackers and marshmallows. Read the rest of this entry
